Short Story Elements

Here's the homework from today.  Please complete either on paper or in your Classwork file on your Drive.

Read p.4-5 "The Jump"

1. PLOT - Write a three sentence summary of "The Jump."

What happens at the beginning/middle/end?

2. CHARACTER - Write one word or phrase that best describes the captain. Explain what evidence from the text and/or real life makes you think that.

3. SETTING: How does the setting cause the conflict?

4. THEME: What lesson about life can this teach us?

ADVANCED:

A1: How does the third-person narrator enhance the mood of the story?

A2: How would you describe the tone of the narrator?  What effect does it have on the mood/theme? (Hint: imagine the effect on the work if the tone was different)
